It was only a matter of time. I’ve been itching to learn more about Whizbee’s breed(s) and age so I ordered an Embark DNA kit. It costed a pretty penny, but the company always offers some consolation discount codes for $30 off.
The how-to is pretty straightforward. They mail you a kit. You open up the box and activate the kit online using the unique code printed on the side of the box. Then you swab your dog’s cheek pouch for 30 seconds. Maybe don’t rub quite as hard as I did so your dog doesn’t hate you. (I can’t control myself sometimes.) Twist the swab into the vial of purple liquid and shake it well so the liquid is fully absorbed. Put the sample vial in a small bio-safe bag, put the small bag back in the original box, and ship it right back to them!
Whizbee was less than thrilled to have her cheek swabbed. She was a very good girl though and let me handle her mouth even though she clearly doesn’t like it. (And yes, I could have taken the time to positively train her to keep her head still, but she will probably never have to do this again in her life so I opted to be an underachieving dog-trainer mom and just let her suffer for 30 seconds. I know. Call animal control!) Severus, on the other hand, was super nosey as always and slightly mortified that I might be giving Whizbee something to eat and not sharing some with him!
It will take 6-8 weeks to receive the results. I have not been sponsored by them so I don’t get any special treatment or extra fast turnaround time. I’m just a mere consumer so Whizbee’s DNA test goes to the very end of the line! In the meantime, does anyone want to take a stab at her breed mixture? Whatever she is, she sure is pretty! 😻
